Be Sober-minded and Watchful

Daily Scripture Threshing for Thursday, August 4, 2022

Today’s Text: 1 Peter 5:1-11

Key Verse: 1 Peter 5:8 (ESV): “Be sober-minded; be watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.

Peter was at the garden of Gethsemane with the Lord. The need to watch with the Master for one hour was impressed upon him, and the other two disciples. Unfortunately, all three of them failed on that duty. So, having suffered a near-shifting bash from the devil, he (Peter) had realized why it was important for him to watch and pray. He understand the two are like a double edged sword that each Christian must put upon himself as virtues.

Like Peter and the rest of the apostles, temptations beset us to rest our oars, lose sight of our need for vigilance, and slide into sleep. Such unguarded moment are prime time for the devil, who is seeking every opportunity to attack us. This, Peter already know so well. Therefore, he is admonishing us never to let the devil, who is always on the prowl, to take advantage of our frailty. Instead, let us become conscious of our his activities. Let us watch out against all Satan’s pranks. Let us watch against destructive self tendencies. Let us be sober is a call to watch our tongues, thoughts, and traffic.

We are never intimidated by the roaring of the devil like a lion — for that is why he roars: to announce its presence, steal our dominion, and strength, and to intimidate our spirit. This is why Peter gave a firm warning for us to “Be sober-minded and watchful. Your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.” Peter says that Satan wants to devour and destroy you, just like a roaring and hungry lion.

Quote for the Day: “Christian vigilance is not about being on the lookout for evils; but it is being at alert and ready to quench their fiery darts should they come.” (Simon Olatunji)

Prayer:  Dear Lord, please help me to be alert and sober-minded moment-by-moment. Help me to surrender my thoughts to you and to remain alert in the chaos of this world — in Jesus’ name. Amen.

With all my Love and Prayers,
