Today’s Text: John 8:3-11

Key Verses: John 8:7 (NIV): “When they kept on questioning him, he straightened up and said to them, “Let any one of you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her.””

Whereas no one has made us the judge in other people’s lives and situations; it so very easy for us to assume that position. We like to make ourselves judges in others’ lives; especially when we think that they have fallen short one way or the other. We are so quick to wear the robe of justice, point accusing fingers and arm ourselves with rocks, pebbles and stones. Like the Scribes and Pharisees that armed themselves with weapons of stones, and came to Jesus, seeking an endorsement to perpetuate their evil deeds. Unfortunately, God always disappoints the machinations of the wicked. Jesus did not condone the woman’s sin, he said go and sin no more; but he also did not condone the self righteous behavior of her accusers.

Christ’s motive was to show us the right way to respond to people find in faults. The words He said, which is rendered “without sin” is like saying: you all better drop your weapons because y’all are as guilty in the same class of sins of which you accuse her. Like these Scribes and Pharisees, we hold people up to the 7th Commandment while breaking other Commandments ourselves. Don’t be that Scribe or the Pharisee, lay every stone aside and “Above all, put on love (i.e, clothe yourselves with love), which binds us all together in perfect unity.” (Colossians 3:14 ) There are yet more nets for the church to cast to draw men to Christ; so why cast stones, and send them away from Him. God has not appointed us judges over the brethren. Let us drop those self-righteous stones and quit being so eager to pull others down.

Quote for the Day: “It May makes you feel good when you drag others to the public censure of others; but it never makes you pure or guiltless." (Simon Olatunji)

Prayer: Dear Lord, you forgave my sins on the cross, and shamed the enemy publicly in your death. Please help me to continue to disarm him, and triumph over him both in my life and in my relationship with others — in Jesus Christ's name. Amen.

With all my love and prayers,

Rev Simon Wale Olatunji, Ph.D.
