Daily Scripture Threshing for Tuesday, June 16, 2020
Today’s Text: Leviticus 16:2-17
Key Verses: Leviticus 16:10 (KJV): “But the goat, on which the lot fell to be the scapegoat, shall be presented alive before the Lord, to make an atonement with him, and to let him go for a scapegoat into the wilderness.”
This scripture reveals how Aaronic priestly covenant images a clear type of Christ who is the High Priest of our salvation. However, Aaron’s sacrifices were imperfect type and are insufficient for remission of sin. It was a sacrifice offered by one who himself needed atonement for personal sins before atoning for those of the people. It comes with much gambling, spiritually revealing that both the people and the priest are unable to determine what is fitting before God. Aaron had to set two goats before the altar: one on his right hand and the other on his left, and cast two pieces of gold, one with inscription for the Lord, and the other for the scapegoat. He then drew out the coin with both hands, placing them upon the goats to determine which was scapegoat.
As long as we are sinners, we are continue to come under the affliction of the law, and continual need for atonement. Unfortunately, our sacrifices can neither take away our sins nor cleanse our conscience from them. That’s why an annual day of atonement was required, and a scapegoat was gambled and led away. Aaron’s sacrifice, therefore, is only a shadow of the good things to come in Christ, not the reality. It is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins. That’s why it was repeated endlessly year after year (Heb 10:1-4). But thanks be to God, who Himself ended the repetition of imperfect sacrifices by offering up His Son, Jesus Christ as both our Perfect High Priest and the Ultimate Scapegoat, whose atonement for sin is once and for all. Therefore, anyone who trusts in Christ’s sacrifice must let go of self presented scapegoats because by His death and resurrection, Christ already paid the full price for perfect expiation for sin and forgiveness from God.
Quote for the Day: "Trusting in the Lamb of God spares us the annual anniversary of guilt and condemnation. It offers us daily celebration of forgiveness and eternal love and life.” (Simon Olatunji)
Prayer: Thank You O Heavenly Father for giving us Your Son, Jesus Christ to pay the ultimate price for sin, and who offers us the gift of eternal life. I give up my sins, my efforts, my scapegoats, and I hold on to Jesus. Amen.
With all my love and prayer,
