Goodbye Jethro

Daily Scripture Threshing for Thursday, January 30, 2020

Today’s Text: Exodus 4:18-20

Key Verses: Exodus 4:18 (ESV): ”Moses went back to Jethro his father-in-law and said to him, “Please let me go back to my brothers in Egypt to see whether they are still alive.” And Jethro said to Moses, “Go in peace.”

Jethro was like everything to Moses. He could never wish to path with him. He was succor in the day of desperation. He was shield, benefactor, helper and counselor through the wilderness. Jethro’s household was his comfort zone. Who among us would give up his comfort zone? O how hard it is to kiss Jethros goodbye. But, God always reserves the best on the doubted side of life so that we’d wonder why we didn't do it sooner.

Life brings us good Jethros that are so hard to leave; but clinging still when the time comes to let go would make us miss out on God’s next level blessing. For some people, it may be leaving a place, or a habit, or a place, or a job. But whatever it is, like Moses, we cannot step into divine promise until we kiss that Jethro goodbye and return from his household.

Quote for the Day: ”The brightness of comfort blinds people from seeing new light. Our quietness deadens us from hearing the sweat chords of better places waiting in the next turn in life.” (Simon Olatunji)

Prayer: Dear Lord, give me the courage to put my hands in yours and follow you, in Jesus’ Name, Amen.

With all my love and prayer,

Rev Simon Wale Olatunji, PhD
