A Handful is Enough

Daily Scripture Threshing for Wednesday, March 10, 2021

Today’s Text: 1 Kings 17:8-24

Key Verse: 1 Kings 17:12 (NKJV) — “As surely as the LORD your God lives," she replied, "I don't have any bread only a handful of flour in a jar and a little olive oil in a jug. I am gathering a few sticks to take home and make a meal for myself and my son, that we may eat it — and die."

Man’s life, motivation and intentions must be touched by, based upon, and guided through the grace of God. Elijah came by the word of the Lord. The woman of Zarephath opening response to him was also “as surely as the Lord your God lives.” Our spiritual, emotional, and physical needs each day are only met in/by/through God. It is in Him we live, and move, and have our being. (Acts 17:28) We must bear in mind that, aside from God, our resources can never meet our needs. Wether we have filled barrel or a failing cruise, we always need God’s help and intervention.

Little is much in God’s providential secret. He turns the handful into a houseful. However, the secret is a mind set to serve His interest first. Ask yourself: Am I seeking to advance God’s kingdom, or attempting to feed my own interests, satisfying selfish desires, and building my own kingdom only? The widow of Zarephath would have gathered her sticks, baked her last handful, eaten with her son and probably died missing all the possibility of a houseful turn around if she had not set God’s interest first. We suffer untold and needless loss each day because we do not seek first or put first the interest or kingdom of God.

At Zarepath, the widow teaches us to quickly call ourselves back from the journey of self pursuit. First, we must always approach God recognizing our needs and unworthiness before the holy God. Full or empty, there’s nothing that we may bring that avail as His grace. The “I have nothing” except God positions a man for His grace. And at the same time, we must be quick to pass from the “I have nothing” to the recognition of that little grace that we have received. The woman was quick to pass from "I don't have any bread” unto “except a handful of flour in a jar.” Those who learn from her may have learnt also that a handful is enough when poured out to God.

Quote for the Day: “Faith brings us into a daily reflection an our dependence on God, and to a thankful reception of His plans and purpose.” (Simon Olatunji)

Prayer: Lord, teach me the blessings of saying “yes” to living the life of the Spirit that trust and obey Your word. Teach me the vanity of seeking to receive only; and the blessings of pouring out, in Jesus name. Amen.

With all my love and prayers,
