Today’s Text: Hebrews 12:1-2
Key Verse: Hebrews 12:1 (ESV): “Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us."
The Christian life is set before us this morning in a metaphor of a race in a stadium filled with spectators. We all have a race to run. We must practice and train to make sure the body is rid of excessive size and weight. We must not put on, or we must take off, unnecessary and unsupportive gear that will render us unfit for the race.
That is what every wise athlete do. He runs with fitting outfit so that he doesn’t become entangled in his own dress and trip up. As believers, we must be careful to run by the same rules. Our race course does not support gears that make movement and speed uneasy. Yes, when we arrived this field of running, we came dressed in all kinds of attire; but when it is time to run, we lay aside or put away limiting outfits. That is what sin and other unsuspecting lifestyles are to us.
When we have a race to run and we have kept our bodies and dresses ready and fitted; we must keep our spirits set. To do this, we must keep Jesus before us. Yes, that’s the difference between the world and us. The world has lost the track already. That is why they think so little of Christ and will not even look on Him. For us, we set nothing else before us but Jesus. We learn to forget ourselves, take up our cross and follow him. A runner looks away from all other objects and fixes his gaze on the finish line. As Christians, Jesus must always be our goal: our finish line in the race of life.
Quote for the Day: “Jesus is the light of the world, those who turn their back on Him will only see their own shadows and grope in its shade." (Simon Olatunji)
Prayer: Dear Lord, please turn my eyes on You, Lord, the Author and Finisher of my faith. Help me run this race well with enduring focus. Save me from those sins that entangle me, tripping me up and causing me to fall — in Jesus Christ's name. Amen.
With all my love and prayers,
Rev Simon Wale Olatunji, Ph.D.
