A Syrian Ready to Perish

Daily Scripture Threshing for Tuesday, November 9, 2021
Today’s Text: Deuteronomy 26:1-11
Key Verse: Deuteronomy 26:5 (KJV): “And thou shalt speak and say before the LORD thy God, A Syrian ready to perish was my father, and he went down into Egypt, and sojourned there with a few, and became there a nation, great, mighty, and populous.”

An unexamined life thinks like a victim even when the trains of victory overwhelmingly surround his or her life. That’s who we are whenever we fail to review the many blessings we have received from God; when we are unable to perceive our many causes or reasons for thankfulness. Who are we, but in many respect, as this man, a wandering Syrian? But for God's loving-kindness we would have been doomed to spiritual and physical peril! This meditation is an uncommon invitation to all believers to review God's dealings with us and our household; and we shall come to a devout acknowledgment of the fact that but for the help of God, we would be nothing.
Friends, that you are alive and have been blessed by this devotional opportunity is an indication that God did not allow you to perish with the great number that the COVID-19 swallowed. We were all liable to death but we lived through it. Should this not create a deepened feeling of awe and a quickened sense of gratitude to the One who spared us?! This is a call like that of Isaiah 51:1: “Listen to me, you who pursue righteousness and who seek the LORD: Look to the rock from which you were cut and to the quarry from which you were hewn.” Unfortunately, sometimes when we are blessed, we forget who we were and our indebtedness to God who has lavished personal and corporate blessings upon us. Each time we ever boast of anything, we are actually displaying ignorance with pride. We must never forget who we were before God’s mercy found us, even amidst our greatest opportunities and glory.
Quote for the Day: “Humility is connected with gratitude. Every sense of grace received reveals any shade of unworthiness.” (Simon Olatunji)
Prayer: Dear Lord, I thank you for the blessings you have bestowed on my life. You have done much more than I could ever imagine. Everything I am and have today is by your grace. I give you thanks in Jesus’ name. Amen.
With all my love and prayers,
