Access to the Source

Daily Scripture Threshing for Wednesday, January 5, 2022

Today’s Text: John 15:1-6

Key Verse: John 15:5 (ESV): “I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.

As Jesus’ disciples, the allegory of the branch is perfectly fitting for us. Life and living, for us, totally depend on Jesus our true vine. We need Him for all things, including our physical and spiritual life. In Romans 6:5, apostle Paul explains how we have been united with him in his death, and shall also certainly be united with him in his resurrection. We are not able to do anything including gain access to God without Him. We are not able to succeed in our enterprise or bear needed spiritual fruit without Him. In all of creation, there is no life-giving thing that does not require access to the source of life.

This is even truer for Christians. We all need unbroken access to Jesus, the source. He is everything to us, His people. He is our Power whether we feel strong or weak; our eyes when there is light or we walk dark places; our Wisdom while dealing with shrewd and perverse generation; and our Salvation from sin and the Hope of eternal glory. Why should any of us ever be sundered from Him? Whoever does is already rendered poor, porous, powerless and lifeless.

The assumption of “apart from me you can do nothing” is all-inclusive. We cannot even dare the performance of the will of God without Him. We cannot follow His footsteps or imitate His lifestyle if we severe ourselves from encountering Him. We cannot keep a clear conscience and live pure without Him. No one of us can maintain personal holiness and active usefulness in His kingdom without the daily, continued relationship with Him.

Quote for the Day: “If indeed Jesus is the Son of God, co-eternal in essence and being as God; He must indeed necessarily and essentially be the Source of spiritual life, and trusted as such.” (Simon Olatunji)

Prayer: Dear Lord, I desire to live my life day by day, trusting, resting and abiding in You. Please melt self-will away and let Your Spirit pulsate through my whole being — in Jesus’ name. Amen.

With all my love and prayers,

Rev Simon Wale Olatunji, Ph.D
