Arise and Shine

Today’s Text: Isaiah 60:1-7

Key Verse: Isaiah 60:1 (ESV): “Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord has risen upon you.”

Gone were the days when we gathered at old fashioned camp meetings in busy drills of prayer exploits all nights, followed by the camp timekeepers daily cry of “arise and shine!” Though it was not easy for our wearied flesh to rise but we step out anyway. The prophet Isaiah was God’s watchman of Israel’s new dawn. The nation has been through judgement and gloomy nights: under terror and oppression from their enemies. It was so terrible time that they had thought that the Lord has forgotten them, and will not save them.

This background helps us gain better understanding of what the advent of light and the glory seen by Isaiah. The people who were once upon a time riddled with the wreckage of sinfulness, and marked by the reproach of separation from their source were going to see an end of their dark days. A dawn of a new day was upon them if they can rise from their pit of shame. In other words, one bold step of faith can end the gloom of their night. Yes, in previous chapters of their lives, their iniquities separate them from God, and from the light of His blessings. But the good news is declared: like them, we too can arise from gloom and pass into the glamor of divine light.

Men who refuse to lay in sin’s despondency, but rise up to the light of God’s Son will shine in His saving light. Even while darkness afflicts the earth, the Lord still shines upon those who seek Him. What it takes for anyone to escape the plagues of darkness and shine in the gospel light is to say, “I will arise,” like the prodigal and come to the beckon of divine light? Staying down, you’d see defeat and damnation; but rising from the dust, you’d see Zion’s lost fortunes restored. No longer shall you continue to be prostrate or grope in darkness. You shall arise and shine in Jesus name. Amen.

Quote for the Day: “Sin leaves us prostrate in the dust. It hides us in thick darkness so that we cannot lift our heads. But by the light of Christ’s salvation, we not only rise in victory, we shine God’s glorious light.” (Simon Olatunji)

Prayer:  Dear Lord, thank you for forgiving us. Thank you for not abandoning us to our dusts, but for reaching out instead to lift us up. Thank you for convicting me of sin and helping me accept your mercy without shame. Help me rise in the power of that love today — in Jesus’ mighty name. Amen.

With all my love and prayers,
