Today’s Text: Ephesians 5:8–17
Key Verse: Ephesians 5:14 (ESV) — “Awake, O sleeper, and arise from the dead, and Christ will shine on you.”

God often calls His people not merely to improve, but to awaken. In Ephesians 5, Paul speaks to believers who once lived in darkness but have now been made light in the Lord, and he urges them to walk as children of light. The call to “Arise, O sleeper” is not a gentle suggestion; it is a spiritual summons to wake up from passivity, sin, and spiritual dullness into the radiant life of Christ. The sleeper is not necessarily the unbeliever alone, but also the believer who has grown numb, distracted, or careless in his walk with God.
The Apistle Paul contrasts darkness and light, exposing the emptiness of the old life and the holiness of the new one. He says, “Take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead expose them” (Ephesians 5:11). That means awakening begins with discernment, repentance, and a refusal to remain comfortable in what Christ has already condemned. To arise is to leave behind spiritual sleepiness and step into watchfulness, wisdom, and obedience. It is a call to leave the shadows and come fully into the light of God’s presence.
This word is deeply relevant because many believers are alive physically but asleep spiritually. They have a form of religion, but their fire is low, their sensitivity is weak, and their urgency is missing. Yet Christ still shines on those who respond to His call. He gives light to the repentant heart, direction to the confused mind, and strength to the weary soul. The awakening is not produced by self-effort alone, but by turning toward Christ, who exposes, heals, and restores.
Action Steps: Examine your life today and identify any area where spiritual sleep has settled in. Confess every habit, attitude, or compromise that keeps you in darkness, and ask the Lord to awaken you again. Commit to walking in wisdom, not as unwise but as wise, making the best use of the time. Choose one concrete step of obedience today that reflects a child of light.
Quote for the Day: “When Christ calls, ‘Arise, O sleeper,’ He is not condemning your weakness; He is inviting your awakening.”— (Simon Olatunji #quotablequotes)
Let Us Pray: Lord, I hear Your call to wake up and arise. Deliver me from every spiritual sleep, every hidden work of darkness, and every careless walk that grieves Your Spirit. Let the light of Christ shine on me, renew my hunger for holiness, and teach me to live as a child of light. Awaken my heart to Your presence and strengthen my steps in obedience. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
