Be Still (Part Six)

Daily Scripture Threshing for Wednesday, March 23, 2022

Today’s Text: Psalm 37:1-11

Key Verse: Psalm 37:7 (ESV): “Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him;

fret not yourself over the one who prospers in his way, over the man who carries out evil devices.”

The thrust of the whole lesson of today’s meditation is that we are not to be discouraged while serving God and seeing what seems like prosperity for the wicked. For except we are calm and exercise spiritual stillness we cannot perceive the difference between reality and appearance. This meditation is a careful demarcation between the apparent and the real. It offers us a clear way to perceive the peculiarity and superiority of eternal prosperity to that of the short-lived mundane prosperity. And there is no way to perceive this difference except we allow silent trust in God to quell the noise of our confusion. As long as earth remains, divine judgement or justice bequeathes basic providence on every created soul, good or bad. And, it is often difficult, for the natural man, to differentiate provision from providence.

This Psalms is here for to us learn the wisdom that only a still and quiet spirit is sober enough to alley the temptation of envious anger against providence—especially when you can’t seem to get why an ungodly person seems better off. Providence gives blessings to a hardworking farmer who is an ungodly man; and friend on the righteous but indolent farmer. And only a quiet reflection of/on true values and justice of God could people think spiritually rather than physically, objectively rather subjectively, in this matter. God's providence and judgement is never prejudiced nor presumptuous. And it always takes a quiet spirit not to be discontent and ungrateful, to such a righteous judge as our God.

Quote for the Day: “The unrighteous rich may have all the good in this life and end up in the pit of hell; while the righteous Lazarus of earth may end in the bosom of Abraham.” (Simon Olatunji)

Prayer: Dear Lord, teach me the wisdom to accept your justice and the humility to be sober at your government of things — in Jesus’ name. Amen.
