“Be Strong”

Daily Scripture Threshing for Monday, February 15, 2021

Today’s Text: 2 Timothy 2:1-13

Key Verses: 2 Timothy 2:1 (NKJV) — “You therefore, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus.

ree

What do you do when things seem to be falling apart, and life seems ebbing out right before your watch? Or what would you do when you find yourself in a situation when real strength was necessary to meet the difficulties and dangers of life? Timothy found himself in a situation in which he has to weather severe ministry storms at Ephesus. He needed strength because he was a young man and inexperienced in many ways. He must be strong because he was sent, and was serving as first bishop ever in the same place where he would later be martyred by being clubbed to death for preaching against the orgiastic worship of the goddess Artemis. His spiritual mentor may not be aware of all that laid ahead of him; but he knows that he needed to be strong.

No doubt, living in a place like the First Century Ephesus is a lot like living in our present 21st Century postmodern day. Like Timothy, we need this admonition for the many discouraging and troubling circumstances of our cities and world; and of course, for the manner in which men and women are deserting God's truth. No matter our generation or location, we all need strength to face life and to be happy in all the spheres of life. However, as believers in Christ, we are especially admonished to know that, in spite of any location or situation, we are to draw strength from the incredible grace of Christ, our Lord, which brings life strengthening joy. That grace only flows from our union with the Lord and makes us strong.

Let this be your soul medicine always: either in moments of spiritually weakness or days of physically discouragement. Being strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus is the only way to survive tough and perilous times. We need all today's Timothys of God to know this. Why? People can only pass on to others what they have received. Head knowledge is of no value in spiritual matters. Unless the truth we teach to others has changed us; it will not change our hearers. Except we are made different and strengthened by the grace of Christ, we cannot help our world during this troubled times. Paul admonished Timothy to make sure he is first strong himself before he can begin to think of strengthening others. He must come to the realization that it is only the grace of God that strengthens us; and it is never available to strong people. Therefore, to lay hold of the grace of God, each of us must first acknowledge that we are weak and do not have any other thing beside Him (God) that can hold us.

Quote for the Day: ”Only men who learn that natural strength is a weight in spiritual venture may receive strength in the grace that is in Christ Jesus.”” (Simon Olatunji)

Prayer: Dear Lord, please strengthen me by the might of your Spirit, teach me to be still in your presence, and draw needed strength for my soul, in Jesus name. Amen.

I wish you all a much glorious and true Valentine's Day with all my love and prayers,

Rev Simon Wale Olatunji, PhD
