Boldness to Speak God's Word

Daily Scripture Threshing for Thursday, April 22, 2021

Today’s Text: Acts 4:23-31

Key Verse: Acts 4:29 (ESV) — “And now, Lord, look upon their threats and grant to your servants to continue to speak your word with all boldness.

We always need God don't we?! And that is why we lift up our voices to Him, crying, and asking for help. When we pray, as God's children, we do so because we are conscious of our natural weakness and inability to help ourselves. A friend once flattered me before my own very eye, claiming that I was born with the courage to preach. Well, I was quick to correct him without hesitation. That was a most incredibly wrong assertion; very dangerous and poisonous flattery. We must never let any man or ego jolt us into that make-believe. Matter of fact, I can not remember any time I did not approach speaking God's Word with fear. I have always begged God for grace and utterances, and the courage needed to speak His word.

The Apostles and all the men God uses are men who realize their inadequacies and are open to God's help. Today's text shows us the New Testament pattern of the Apostles, who trusted God both for themselves and the whole community they served. Boldness to speak God's Word does not come from erudition and oratory. No, it is not a function of the natural man; but it comes when we learn the secret of leaning on God. Christ's followers and ministers do better in their calling when they depend on the graces He bestows through prayer. We will be threatened and terrified except we cultivate an apostolic attitude of prayer.

Quote for the Day: “Today’s Church risks abandoning its undertaking and commission because rather than depend on God, it depends on committees.” (Simon Olatunji)

Prayer: O Lord, hear their threats, and give us, your servants, great boldness in preaching your word, in Jesus's name. Amen.

With all my love and prayer,

Rev Simon Wale Olatunji, Ph.D.
