Calming Faith During Calamity

Daily Scripture Threshing for Sunday, June 27, 2021

Today’s Text: Luke 10:25-37

Key Verses: Habakkuk 3:17, 18 (NIV) “Though the fig tree does not bud and there are no grapes on the vines, though the olive crop fails and the fields produce no food, though there are no sheep in the pen and no cattle in the stalls, yet I will exult in the LORD; I will rejoice in the God of my salvation!”

I was blessed by a conversation with a friend yesterday. He reminds me that darkness and light are the same in eyes of God, their maker, who uses both for His chosen and glorious purposes. Today's text is probably a prophetic description of our present peculiar season of distress. In God's foreknowability, He sees ahead that these days aren't funny at all. He understands just how perilous it is. He is aware of how pained we are about everything. But He doesn't just know ahead, He has spoken ahead of time about it. Through Habakkuk, God prepares us so that we are able to keep a calm and gracious heart during our days of trials.

The prophet describes the ugly face of the season and also declares a position of incredible tranquility that God's people must maintain during such seasons. The God we serve is in control of times and seasons. Therefore, regardless of what they bring to us, we can be sure that God has never been, is not, and can not be, a mere spectator in our affairs. Not that God is really the agent that brings these things upon us; no. Pain, calamity and every other misery are the consequence of our sin. However, God's Infinite Wisdom allows them to point us to a necessary end. What else therefore, can calm our troubled spirit than to be entirely dependent upon God in all seasons.

This awareness alone gives us peace even when earthly comforts and pleasures fail. And thus, we may trust in God and rejoice in gratitude that whether temporal blessings abound or abase, believers in Christ can yet rejoice in His graces and love. Our rejoicing is never in things. It is in God. Our rejoicing is not at the expense of any others' comfort. It is in the God of my salvation.

Quote for the Day: “Being godly minded is being gracious. The natural mind looks for other things to give it joy; but the spiritual mind springs joy from within." (Simon Olatunji)

Prayer: Touch me, O Lord, and fill me with your light and your hope. Please give me strength when I am weak, love when I feel forsaken, courage when I am afraid, wisdom when I feel foolish, comfort when I am alone, hope when I feel rejected, and perfect calmness when I am in turmoil, in Jesus' name. Amen.

With all my love and prayers,
