Today’s Text: 1 Kings 17:1-7
Key Verses: 1 Kings 17:2, 3 (NIV) — “Then the word of the LORD came to Elijah: Leave here, turn eastward, and hide yourself by the Brook Cherith, east of the Jordan."
Brothers and sisters, God in His mercies has brought us to a new month; but let us not be in a hurry to leave the subject of Cherith behind. It is not an error that today's devotional thoughts are sequel to the past 3 days’. Cheriths don't naturally go away so easily. The pandemic, the lockdown, disappointments, loss of loved ones, loss of job, and other life-changing occurrences of today may be likened to Elijah’s Cherith experience. Whatever looks like: God is withholding what you love most, what you'd rather have or do from you is likeable to that place where God hid Elijah. Everyone gets to Cherith at some points in time. Everybody feels that God closes some doors on them. And indeed, everybody hates Cherith.
However, let us look through the lens of scriptures and seek deeper meaning to Cherith. Yes, Cherith seems to close the door(s) on us; but it is actually a place where God hides His Elijahs from trouble. There are jeopardies we can neither see coming, nor avoid; but which God prevents by taking us to, or hiding us in Cherith. Ahab sought to kill Elijah; so God hid him. God hid Moses in the wilderness of Midian, at the yard of Jethro. He hid Joseph in prison until his word came. He hid David in caves to preserve him for the throne. He hid Jesus in Egypt to fulfil His words. He hid Paul in Arabia before launching him forth for his missionary exploits. In Hebrew, the word Cherith means a cutting, a separation, or gorge, and it is geographically located at the backyard of King Ahab. So, it is not just the place of holding back; it is a place of preservation; it is a place of protection; and a place of preparation for greater purpose.
There is always a little brook in Cherish. Let there be stern drought everywhere, but if you are in God's Cherith, there is a flow. Cherith is not by choice, it is by call. It came by a specific word of the Lord: “Depart from here and turn eastward and hide yourself by the brook Cherith which is east of the Jordan. Cherith helps us walk in obedience. And each obedience leads us onward to the next level of grace. Elijah was not ready for Zarepath until he had obeyed every command for Cherith. Until all the waters of Cherith’s brook are dry. There is no hurrying out of Cherith. It's a place of long-suffering, constant walk by faith and obedience.
Quote for the Day: “Being at the center of God's will aligns us with purpose, assigns us provisions and severes us from spiritual suffocation.” (Simon Olatunji)
Prayer: O Lord, please let Your will alone be done in my life all my days on earth, even as it is in heaven, in Jesus name. Amen.
I wish you a Happy New Month with all my love and prayers,
