Today’s Text: Genesis 13:2-18
Key Verses: Genesis 13:8–9 (ESV): “Is not the whole land before you? Separate yourself from me. If you take the left hand, then I will go to the right, or if you take the right hand, then I will go to the left.”
Our generation may not understand or appreciate Paul’s message in Philippians 2:3 on the need for us to do nothing through faction or vainglory, but to consider others better than us in all things. However, we have an example of Abraham, the father of faith to follow on this matter. Putting others first is an important theme of both Testaments. For Abraham, the prosperity of his nephew, Lot is never a problem. He delighted in it. Unfortunately, this has become a difficult if not impossible position for this increasingly selfish age. For Abraham, to live and let live is not just enough, his nephew must prosper, and, if possible, do better.
Therefore, rather than let their servants and/or personal gains ruin their relationship, father Abraham laid us an example: he let Lot choose any area that seemed best for himself while he (Abram) was content with whatever was left. Brethren, if we all understand the economy of heaven, we would all quit struggling to grab what seem good and fertile. We do not serve a grabbing savior. Jesus gave up more than his life for our sake; He left His heaven’s glory as well. At the long run, obedience is always believers’ best policy. We cannot put others first except we understand this spiritual principle, and chose to obey God’s word. Abraham becomes an example whereas Lot becomes a lesson. Lot chose a more fertile land, but it unfortunately ended up to be a destroyed slum.
Quote for the Day: “If Jesus laid down His life, it is Christlike duty and kindness to lay down our interest for the sake of others.” (Simon Olatunji)
Prayer: Dear Lord, I thank you for always putting me first, and giving your self on the cross for me. You have showed me how to love. Please help me to show your love to other people by putting them first no matter who they are or what they have done — in Jesus’ name. Amen.
With all my Love and Prayers,
