Dare to Be like the Daughters of Zelophehad

Today's Text: Numbers 27:1-11; 36:1-12

Key Verse: Numbers 27:7 (KJV) — “And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying, The daughters of Zelophehad speak right: thou shalt surely give them a possession of an inheritance among their father's brethren; and thou shalt cause the inheritance of their father to pass unto them.”

Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah were five sisters who refused to let a painful circumstance erase their father’s name or deny them their rightful inheritance. Their father, Zelophehad of the tribe of Manasseh, died without sons; under the existing custom, his land could have passed away from his household. But these daughters did not surrender to silence, bitterness, or resignation. They came together and stood before Moses, Eleazar the priest, the princes, and the whole congregation at the door of the tabernacle. With reverence, clarity, and courage, they asked, “Why should the name of our father be done away from among his family, because he hath no son?” (Numbers 27:4). Dare to be a daughter of Zelophehad: dare to bring a righteous concern before God and godly leadership, even when tradition, circumstance, or fear tells you that your voice does not matter.

They were not rebellious women demanding attention; they were faithful daughters appealing to justice. They did not insult Moses, attack the leaders, or despise the law. They presented their case with honor, truth, and confidence in the God of Israel. Moses did what every godly leader must do when confronted with a question larger than personal opinion: “Moses brought their cause before the LORD” (Numbers 27:5). Then came Heaven’s answer: “The daughters of Zelophehad speak right” (Numbers 27:7). God vindicated five women who had the courage to stand together for what was just, and their petition became a statute of judgment for Israel: if a man died without a son, his inheritance was to pass to his daughter. Dare to be a daughter of Zelophehad: speak with grace, stand on truth, and trust God to establish what is right in His time. Their appeal was heard, affirmed, and incorporated into Israel’s inheritance law.

Their courage was not merely for themselves. Their respectful advocacy opened a way of justice for generations who would come after them. What began as five sisters refusing to be erased became a God-given provision protecting family inheritance in Israel. They did not accept an unfair loss as inevitable; neither did they seek justice by abandoning submission to God’s order. When a later concern arose about preserving tribal inheritance, they obeyed the Lord’s instruction and married within their father’s tribe, ensuring both their personal inheritance and the inheritance of Manasseh remained secure (Numbers 36:6-12). Dare to be a daughter of Zelophehad: contend for what is right without abandoning what is holy; pursue justice without losing obedience; and use your voice in a manner that honors God.

Therefore Scripture’s verdict remains — five courageous sisters, named by God and remembered by generations, who stood at the entrance of the congregation when silence would have been easier. Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah teach us that godly boldness is neither rude nor rebellious. It is the courage to stand, the wisdom to speak, the humility to submit your cause to God, and the faith to believe that Heaven still sees those whom systems overlook. God is still looking for men and women who will not merely complain in private but will prayerfully, respectfully, and faithfully stand for truth, justice, family, and covenant inheritance. Dare to stand together. Dare to speak right. Dare to believe that one obedient appeal can create a path of blessing for your family, church, and generation.

Action Steps: Identify one area in which fear, past disappointment, or an unfair circumstance has caused you to remain silent. Bring that matter before the Lord in prayer, then seek the right and godly way to address it with truth, humility, and respect. Refuse bitterness, refuse resignation, and refuse to let your inheritance in Christ be diminished by intimidation. Stand with someone whose voice has been overlooked, and make one practical act of advocacy that reflects God’s justice and compassion.

Let Us Pray: Heavenly Father, thank You for the courage of Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Tirzah. Deliver me from the fear that keeps me silent when truth must be spoken. Give me a heart that seeks justice without bitterness, boldness without rebellion, and wisdom to present every cause before You. Let my voice honor Your Word, protect my family’s inheritance, and open doors of blessing for those coming behind me. Teach me to stand with faith, speak with grace, and obey You completely — in Jesus’ most glorious name. Amen.
