Dealing with Falsity

Daily Scripture Threshing for Monday, June 7, 2021

Today’s Text: Exodus 20:13-17

Key Verse: Exodus 20:16 (ESV): “You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.

There are five categories of negative warning within today’s part of the Ten Commandment. These include murder, adultery, theft, slander and covetousness. All five constitute God’s commands intended at helping us have a healthy and positive communal relationship. Though these are laws, they are not meant to impress us. Rather, they are meant to protect us and promote the flow of brotherliness among us. The law shows us how and what we should be. show the spirit we should cherish towards our neighbours; those who equally with ourselves are the objects of Divine providence and mercy. God’s laws are always good. On the one hand they show what we must give to God and others, and in the other, what we have right to expect from Him (God) and others men.

God’s instructions against falsity and deceit is for our own good. False balance, false weight and false witness are abomination to him. Today’s part of the Ten Commandment may be regarded as the marvel of the Law. We serve God, the author of all truth, it doesn't matter what the world thinks about His Word, it is still truth! And we must eschew falsehood. The God we serve, for our own sake, forbids speaking falsely in any matter, lying, manipulating, and any way devising and designing to deceive our neighbour. He does not want us to speak unjustly against our neighbor. We must not prejudice any man’s reputation by inciting them, bearing false witness against them, or laying to hands on them for charges they or we know nothing about. Even the secular world recognizes that there is no falsity with God. That’s why they still use the word of God as the standard for weighing truth. Our courts always ask: "Do you promise to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth, so help you God?"

Quote for the Day: “The sacrifice of truth is the beginning of most human frictions." (Simon Olatunji)

Prayer: Come, O Holy Spirit, and as You immerse us in Your truth, so make us effective witnesses of that truth within our families, among our friends, and to all the world, in Jesus' name. Amen.

With all my love and prayers,

Rev Simon Wale Olatunji, Ph.D.
