Discerning God’s Voice

Daily Scripture Threshing for Thursday, July 20, 2023

Today’s Text: Isaiah 30:18-26

Key Verse: Isaiah 30:21 (ESV): “And your ears shall hear a word behind you, saying, “This is the way, walk in it,” when you turn to the right or when you turn to the left.”

We are so much surrounded by noise today. Everything humanly possible appears to be a good source of noise already—our busy streets, social media, earplugs, factories, civil unrests, flashing alerts, news headlines, spiritual warfare, and systemic issues including racism, gender confusion and pluralism. It is becoming increasingly harder to experience a calm necessary to hear God’s characteristically gentle voice. But we have this precious promise that we can discern God's voice despite all the noises and confusion.

Discerning God’s voice is not tricky nor meant to trip us up or send us on a wild goose chase. There is no doubt that God speaks to His people, and wants to speak to you. When we are diligent enough in pursuit of God through His word. “You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart” (Jeremiah 29:13). His counsel are hidden in His words; and they may be unearthed when our connection with Him deepens as we dive daily and deeper into His Word. The Holy Spirit amplifies God’s voice right off the pages of Scripture with a direct answer to thirsting of our hearts—just like a friend whispers the way to his friend.

Discerning God’s voice is never coincidental. It always results from a man’s intent in seeking Him—of which He promises and is faithful to be found. Friends, you can ask God for the wisdom in discerning His voice today. You can quiet all other noise and experience God m’s direction in your life. By my experience in Thailand and South Korea, Eastern men meditate by clearing their mind, Christians who seek to discern God’s voice is about filling our mind with His words.

Quote for the Day: “Cultivating God’s presence is a daily walk. It is never a product of accident or miracle. It is a process of intentional pursuit of God.” (Simon Olatunji)

Prayer: Dear Lord, please teach me to be discerning. I want to follow Your lead, Lord. Please shift my perspective: let it align with Yours until I can discern—hear, understand, and navigate according to Your promptings and wisdom in every situation— in Jesus’ mighty name. Amen.

With all my love and prayers,

Rev Simon Wale Olatunji, Ph.D.
