Daily Scripture Threshing for Sunday, January 26, 2020
Today’s Text: John 6:60-65
Key Verse: John 6:60-63 (ESV): _”The Spirit gives life; the flesh profits nothing. The words I have spoken to you are spirit and they are life.”
When I was eleven, I cried hard to my parents so that they could send me to the family house to live there with my uncle, new phew, niece and others. My attraction to the place was the old-fashioned oil lamp, with its cotton-wick burning from the wall on a hoe-dish of oil. I watched the light all evening with amazement; but soon, the lamp ran out of oil, the wick burned dry, and the smoke made me cough. Suddenly, the same thing that attracted me was sending me away from the family house. I immediately spoke to my uncle to take me back to my father.
Some of us Christians are like this wick. We truly mean and try to shine our lights for the glory of God; but instead, we stink so rudely and exhume very bad fumes. And what was supposed to be our attraction is now sending people away. That’s what happens when we burn self, strength, wisdom as the fuel of our witness rather than depend on the the ever increasing and renewing oil of the Holy Spirit. Cotton-wicks can last indefinitely, burning brightly and without any irritating smoke, if the fuel, is kept on the supply. Without the constant and continued help of the Holy Spirit in our lives, we’d send people away from the light with selfish or selfly irritating smoke.

Prayer: Lord, teach and help to always depend on you. Help me to always acknowledge my total dependence on you to the extent that I will be a better reflection of your light, in Jesus name! Amen.
