Today’s Text: 1 Timothy 2: 9–15

Key Verses: 1 Timothy 2:11 (KJV) — “Let the woman learn in silence with all subjection.

This is one of the most hotly-debated passages of the New Testament, and perhaps the most weaponized to relegate women to the background in ministry. But allowing the author (in context) to say what he truly means to us is crucial for understanding any scriptural text. The context of this text is apostolic concern about women who were foreign both to ancient culture as well as to religious freedom. In traditional Judaism, women have been under a cultural and religious traditions that gave no identify or voice. They wound not sit with men in the tent or gate. They would not be counted among the thousands fed. They were veiled behind the synagogue and temple curtains. They were not allowed to study the Law; and they (except for the daughters of Zelophehad) had no part in the distribution of inheritance.

There are four basic traditional ways to approach a genuine meaning and understanding of this text: the overall unity and revelation of scripture; original meaning of Paul's words; background or context of the recipient; and the New Testament pattern. Despite the Judaistic traditional limits imposed on women, never does Scriptural revelation (in part or in whole) go against women in ministry. This meditation will take us through all four appraiched, and today being the first part of this topic, we will begin to explore the overall revelation of scripture. Miriam the daughter of Amram and Jochebed, and older sister of Moses and Aaron was referred to as a prophetess in the Torah and as one of the seven major female prophets of Israel in the Talmud. She led Israel in an incredible prophetic office in worshipping the Lord after the Exodus. Her ministry is the first biblical evidence that women are not just there to simply echo the man; but she provides us an opportunity to see that God has space for the Israelite women, so that they have a voice in the community, to be part of deep religious encounter, experience and celebration.

Quote for the Day: ”No program, policy or principle of man can disallow what God allows or allow what He disallows.” (Simon Olatunji)

Prayer: Dear Lord, give me deeper revelation of your purpose, and give your light to all shaded areas of my understanding, in Jesus name. Amen.

DAY 2 OF 21 DAYS OF DOMONION: Please join our 21 Days of Operation Daniel Fasting & Prayer starts today with daily gathering in church between 9 and 10pm CST. Use the words of Deuteronomy 1:1-8 to pray, today, against reversal of the divine process in your life. The secular needs the aid of the spiritual and policy bows to prophecy and not vice versa.

With all my love and prayers,

Rev Simon Wale Olatunji, PhD
