Today’s Text: 1 Timothy 2: 9–15
Key Verses: 1 Timothy 2:11 (KJV) — “Let the woman learn in silence with all subjection.“

Today’s meditation takes us deeper than the context. We can now peep more closely into authorial intention of the controversial “let the woman learn in silence with all subjection.” Having taken note that all coordinating and united scriptural antecedents, the context of the passage, and the culture of the time, one may now safely say that Paul does not mean that women are to remain "silent," as those who weaponize this text against women claim. We can discover what the apostle is doing with that verse is we understand the root of the original word: the Greek, hesuchios, which is being used in several other places where silence is not intended. For instance, the same Apostle used the same word, hesuchios in 1 Timothy 2:2; 1 and Thessalonians 4:11 to imply peacefulness, stillness, or calmness rather than silent. Apostle Peter in 1 Peter 3:4 also used the same word to imply “gentle and quiet spirit.“
As such, the apostle was helping untrained, newly converted and freshly liberated women to exercise decorum in an age when religious expressions could be hysterical. Paul was teaching to avoid a situation of non decorum. The is a sustained idea from the two preceding verses (9 and 10) where the author called for moderation and modesty in the women’s appearance. It is therefore unfortunate that most people today ignore the call and need for modesty and rather use this text erroneously to suppress, oppress and repress the female opportunities to full expression of their priesthood or ministry, rather than its original goal of peacefulness and self-control. It will be okay for the church to unite to reproof any lousy woman or women who is/are abusing their liberty in Christ as an occasion for license. But it is completely out of context to claim otherwise from this text.
Quote for the Day: ”The idea of women being weaker vessel must be put in proper perspective: rather than the idea of bodily, moral or spiritual inability, it scripturally implies that they are a lot more valuable, and are to be treated with sensitivity, gentleness and respect.” (Simon Olatunji)
