Today’s Text: Job 11:13-19

Key Verses: Job 11:14 (YLT): “If iniquity is in thy hand, put it far off, and let not perverseness dwell in thy tents.”

During the days of Job, people thought that when a man is going through afflictions, then he’s being punished for wrong-doing. This was the background to the position of all three friends of Job as they tried to help him navigate through his suffering, or help him come out of it. Today’s meditation is not going to be focused on their mindset or the cause of Job’s affliction; but we want to trace how, in spite of their ignorance, God made use of their genuine soul search to reveal simple pathway to repentance before the Lord for anyone who errs. Therefore, today’s devotional meditation comes not as the voice of Job’s friend, Zophar; but the voice of the friend that sticks closer than a brother, and lays down His life for his friends. John 15:13 tells us: “Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends.” Though you failed before Him, yet He calls you friends, and is willing to help you.

Today’s text offers us a deep reflection on how to return to the Lord even if we have for long groped in the darkness of wrong-doing. It offers a way out to you who have tried and are tired. It gives hope to those who are unable to help themselves. The voice of a friend greater than Zophar comes clear, showing us the way to overcome perverseness in the human spirit and life. It is never through self struggle otherwise you will falter and fail. There’s no universal method to overcoming sin. No secular support systems to quit addiction can uproot the core of habit. The first place is to come to God with a ready heart (v.13a); then to stretch out your hands towards Him in prayer (v.13b). These are marks of true repentance. People don’t cry to God except they’ weary of self efforts. To stretch hands towards God shows humility and indicates readiness to return to Him. And when we do, God will abundantly pardon (Isaiah 55:7). One more thing then remains, each man must be deliberate in letting perverseness not dwell in his heart; but rather, actually put away, renounce, forsake and abandon sin. Zophar said, “If iniquity is in thy hand, put it far off (v.14a). “Then brightness shall dawn upon thy life” (v. 17). This is God’s promise of forgiveness, renewal and good life for you. Are you willing and ready to deal with perverseness in your life?

Quote for the Day: "Genuine happiness and new life is within reach for everyone except those who refuse to stretch their hands to Jesus Christ to freely take it.“ (Simon Olatunji)

Prayer: Lord Jesus, let not perverseness be found in me; and help me walk daily in your love. Amen.

With all my love and prayer,
