Daily Scripture Threshing for Thursday, July 16, 2020

Today’s Text: Psalm 31:9-24

Key Verses: Psalm 31:18 (KJV): “Let the lying lips be put to silence; which speak grievous things proudly and contemptuously against the righteous.

Have you ever wondered just how our society is more and more inculcating the culture of dishonesty and deceit as a means to getting ahead in day-to-day life? You are probably used to the following clichés: your check is on the way; hold-on one second; I am strong; we service what we sell; your comfort is our business; we will call you right back; an agent will be with you shortly; one size fits all; special offer for the first 100 people; we are praying for you; we are more touched by what touches you; give me just five minutes to conclude; it's not about the money, it's the principle; we’re all equal before the law; I’m the least racist person, etc. Unfortunately, we wallow deeper and deeper everyday in these and countless other lies so much that lying has become systemic and a lifestyle for us. It’s so bad, that if not checked, the future may literally live a lie.

However, we’ve got great news! We can be grateful for how today’s scripture both entreats, commands and helps us get rid of slanderous tongues. Putting off lying tongues is so important to the psalmist that he expresses the enormity of the evil effect of lying — how it causes grievous things! We all know about that don’t we?! Aren’t we having to live within the ruins of the society that we build with lies? If you doubt this, then you probably have your head in the cloud. A lie has no legs but once one is told, it requires continued lying to cover or back it up. David teaches us that stretching truth and insisting on putting lying tongues away is the only way out for any generation — his or ours. In Psslm 4:2 he larments as God’s prophet, “How long, O men, will my honor be maligned? How long will you love vanity and seek after lies?” Sadly enough, many Christians are also swallowed in this mire and also whet their tongues like swords, and shoot arrows of bitter words (Ps 64:3,4).

Many of us live like Hippos hiding in the trees. But Jesus commands us to rather let our yea be yea and nay be nay (Matthew 5:37). By this, He wants our words to be as good as our oath. Playing pranks by using profane swearing is an evidence of an unregenerate or untruthful heart. Today’s mediation is a call on us to put away lying tongues and teach truth as lifestyle becoming of Christ’s worthy ambassadors on earth. Let us always declare truth wherever found and reveal falsehood where not found; and our lives shall image Christ, and our world shall be a better place.

Quote for the Day: "Whenever a Christian needs to trifle with the name of God or his calling to prove a point, he is already giving evidence to a life that’s unlike Christ, and mostly proving the falsity of his claim.“ (Simon Olatunji)

Prayer: Gracious Lord, please send Your Spirit of truth upon me. Help me to always walk in integrity. Guide my daily thoughts, words and actions to that I will live daily by the Spirit of truth, in Jesus name. Amen.

With all my love and prayer,
