God’s “Let” Diary (Part 51) — Let Us Hear the Conclusion

Daily Scripture Threshing for Friday, July 31, 2020

Today’s Text: Ecclesiastes 12:12-14

Key Verses: Ecclesiastes 12:13 — “Let us hear the conclusion of the whole matter: Fear God, and keep his commandments: for this is the whole duty of man.

We come to the end of another month: a lot has been heard and said about the fear of God, which is born out of love for Him. Once again, the wise preacher tells us that our whole duty is to fear God and keep His commandments. He tells us what the fear of God do to us and in us. He tells how it first brings us face to face with the reality of life’s futility without God — so that we are afraid to face life without Him. It then helps us tremble for our inadequacies so that we are willing to embrace His love and pardon. And finally, the fear of the Lord brings us into evidential, true and genuine worship that is acceptable to Him.

Anyone who fails to fear God in this way falls short of the grace to embrace His love, and invariably risks His terror. We may liken that person to a Florida prisoner, years back, who was granted pardon by the governor but refused release from prison. When his matter was brought before the judge that sentenced him; it was ruled that unless he accepted the pardon, he would have to serve his original sentence-term. This is as true for us also: unless we let the awe of God bring us into accepting His provision of pardon, we would continue to grope under the fear of death; languish under the yoke of guilt m; and miss out of His promised eternal life with Him.

Quote for the Day: "The fear of God helps us tremble for our inadequacies so that we are willing to embrace God’s love and pardon.” (Simon Olatunji)

Prayer: Gracious God, we pray that our hearts would learn how to rightfully fear you, keep your words and worship before you in spirit and truth, in Jesus Christ name. Amen.

With all my love and prayer,

Rev Simon Wale Olatunji, PhD
