Today’s Text: Isaiah 58:1-12
Key Verses: Isaiah 58:6 (KJV) — “Is not this the fast that I have chosen? to loose the bands of wickedness, to undo the heavy burdens, and to let the oppressed go free, and that ye break every yoke?”

When we fast, we skip food and, at the end we are quick to descend upon them with all energy; but in the text, God is calling for a complete circle of self denial. When we fast and deny ourselves of those dainties, it is our opportunity to share them with those who are burdened by lack. But the Lord is demanding a self denial more than appetite. As His children, God wants us to be touched by the cause of the oppressed; and be willing to deny ourselves of anything to ensure justice is served to those trampled by wealthy lords. He wants every moment of our fast to be an opportunity to share our goods with those ravaged by poverty; and end oppression.
As far as this oracle is concerned, there is no better and more acceptable self denial than being God’s agent of relief to people who grope under various yokes — of sin, intemperance, moral decadence, and cruelty to God and others. As God’s people, we are called to be living help to them. For how shall we be God’s true agent of love in a world where people are helplessly poor and pained except we pour ourselves out in the spirit of Christ.’s sacrifice. This is not a mere call to programmed charity; it is a call to a lifestyle of sacrifice. When we find those who are hungry; with joy, we must feed them; clothe those who are naked; and visit those who are imprisoned.
Quote for the Day: "Except it expresses true sorrow for sin and concern for sinners, our fast is not better than a mere affliction of the flesh.” (Simon Olatunji)
Prayer: Dear Lord, burden me for godliness and fill me with a desire to love you, in Jesus name. Amen.
With all my love and prayer,
