God’s “Let” Diary (Part 70 ) — Let Us Eat Pulse

Daily Scripture Threshing for Friday, August 21, 2020

Today’s Text: Daniel 1:3-21

Key Verses: Daniel 1:12 (KJV) — “Prove thy servants, I beseech thee, ten days; and let them give us pulse to eat, and water to drink.

What is the origin and basis of dignity? Is it in dynasty of royalty, or sought in ancestral fortune? Or, is it to be traced to erudity, scholarships or nobility? Throughout all history, true dignity is never to be found in any of these things: not in wealth, and never in royalty. But the word of God points us to the source of true dignity. It is something to be found only in pursuit of God, and His righteous purpose. Today’s Bible story of Daniel presents us with a vivid example of how we may chat a worthy course for a life of dignity. The text is like a character mirror set before us through which we can see ourselves. We can herein test ourselves and find out whether we are living to eat, eating to live, or we understand the Bible principle for men — real men — who do not live by bread alone (Deuteronomy 8:3, Matthew 4:4).

Good fortune is not the luxury that is sudden thrown at your lap; but the Daniel-like strength of character to shun the sudden outburst of unexpected opportunity. Life is mostly a test, and that is why the Bible warns us that anyone that is hasty for torture shall not be innocent (Proverbs 28:20). Because godly and truly dignified men would rather identify with, and bear the contentment of abasement than the enjoyment royal dainties that’s identified with idolatry. Daniel was an unusual youth. He prelived the New Testament position: “whether therefore ye eat or drink... do all to the glory of God," and thereby set us an example. Friends, purpose attracts dignity; and if we would be men and women of dignity, we must learn to pursue purpose like Daniel. He purposed in his heart to rather eat pulse than to defile himself. What would you do?

Quote for the Day: "Integrity goes with dignity. Real men understand that they can not die by what they cannot live by.” (Simon Olatunji)

Prayer: Father, please examine my heart. Help me to love dignity and to walk in integrity. Give me a swift awareness of wrong and the courage not to be defiled by them, in Jesus’ Name. Amen.

With all my love and prayer,
