Today’s Text: Obadiah 1:1-4
Key Verses: Obadiah 1:1 (KJV) — “The vision of Obadiah. Thus said the Lord GOD concerning Edom; We have heard a rumor from the LORD, and an ambassador is sent among the heathen, Arise you, and let us rise up against her in battle.”
We serve a patient and long-suffering God. Definitely, true patience takes its root in His sovereign attributes. In Him, patience goes hand in hand with long-suffering and long-suffering with kindness: so that His patience stems from His grace toward mankind. He is not willing for any to perish. He is ever seeking to be merciful toward us, and to provide us a way of escape from His wrath. However, when man’s cup of iniquity becomes full, and their rebellion against Him reaches a head; God is left without a choice than to visit us according to the multitude of idols in our hearts and stumbling blocks of iniquities before our faces.
Edom’s cup was full before the Lord. They have been overly puffed and bragged that they could not be brought down. God, therefore, burdened Obadiah with a twofold message that judgment is coming upon the house of Esau, and help is coming for Zion. Today, every image of Edom should have learnt that God opposes the proud and gives grace to the humble. They should have learnt that God cannot be stopped nor can His counsel be thwarted. Unfortunately, all terrorists and haters of God chose the ways of Edom. It never suffices them that their birthright is lost on a plate of pottage; they stand on the way to resist advancement of God’s people disregarding the particular care that God takes of His people.
Therefore, the Lord issues a verdict to rise against anyone puffing up against His counsel in our generation. He (God) Himself shall arise and all His enemies shall scatter. When king Herod, a true Edomite, a red man and truly soiled by blood, opposed God’s plan of saving His people: he threw Bethlehem into mourning their young; but he did not succeed in his enterprise. if Obadiah lives today, he will cry against the puffing of Islamic jihadists: Herdsmen, Boko Haram, Isis and other faces of terror that soil their hands with innocent blood, and throw the world into mourning. But just as Edom failed, and Herod did not succeed, they will not succeed in their enterprise. This is the word of the Lord against all manifestations of Idumean anger against His children and work in Israel, Nigeria, Middle East, Asia, India, America and the whole world — the Lord is raising His standard against them.
