Daily Scripture Threshing for Tuesday, September 8, 2020

Today’s Text: Jonah 3:4-10

Key Verses: Jonah 3:8 (KJV) — “But let man and beast be covered with sackcloth, and cry mightily unto God: yea, let them turn every one from his evil way, and from the violence that is in their hands.”

We have heard that if the wicked forsake their ways and the unrighteous their thoughts and turn to the LORD, He will have mercy on them, and to our God, for He will freely pardon. So the people of Nineveh, from the greatest to the least repented toward God. Today’s men of wealth and nobility that set their hearts up so high against God must learn from Nineveh’s king and nobles. This meditation calls on all of us to learn from men of Nineveh; come to the place of an instinctive recognition of the holiness of God, a practical realization of our own unworthiness, and a readiness to respond to God in repentance.

The sin of Nineveh was gross acts of violence, injustice and dishonesty. Obviously, these sins have now reached its heights in our own generation. Men trample other men and the strong take advantage of the weak. We surely need more repentance and mercy. We must stop the hate and eschew violence. Or have we not seen from this scripture that no one can be in friendship with God while he is at enmity with man? Whether it is an inequality fueled by gain or race; God hates the inequality promoted among us and is calling us to repent. It is high time we free our consciences and the church from these guilt. It is time to cease from hiding racism within our religious hearts and stop covering up inequality with sanctimonious expressions. The call to “let man and beast be covered with sackcloth” represents the need to humble our every sense of luxury and pride.

Quote for the Day: "The fasts that touch heaven most are not just those that abstain from food, but the ones that avoid sin.” (Simon Olatunji)

Prayer: O Lord, turn us to Your love again. Cause our hearts to pant for Your truth. Help us turn from our wicked ways and seek You, in Jesus’ Name. Amen.

I wish all my American friends and readers a happy Labor Day with all my love and prayers,
