God’s Right Hand: Praying with Jabez Part 6

Today’s Text: 1 Chronicles 4:1-10

Key Verse: 1 Chronicles 4:10 (KJV): “And Jabez called on the God of Israel, saying, Oh that thou wouldest bless me indeed, and enlarge my coast, and that thine hand might be with me, and that thou wouldest keep me from evil, that it may not grieve me! And God granted him that which he requested.”

Just like praying amiss is a product of a lack of proper understanding of God’s beneficence, praying right comes out of a man’s understanding of the sublime attributes of God. Take a look at the next heart cry of Jabez. You will see a man who understands God’s operation in the history of His people. He must have learnt how Israel began with few men but grew in to a nation that is strong, mighty and populous because the hands of the Lord was with them. Perhaps, he foresaw how the Church would begin with few feeble and coward men, with little or no wealth, and little or no talent, but how she would blow up and grow so strong, clothed with the Holy Spirit’s might and power, enlarged in every coast. And the only differentiating force is God’s right hand upon them.

In biblical cosmology, the right hand of the Lord represents His power in its loftiest manifestation, its sovereignty, its resistlessness, its omnipotence. If God’s hands are upon you; you’d proper beyond explanation. Unfortunately, most of the time, we seek the wrong things of life. But, no, not Jabez. For him, the Psalm of David (118:16) comes alive: “The right hand of the LORD is exalted: the right hand of the LORD doeth valiantly.” Beloved, all things in creation are under the operating system of God’s right hand. The dominion of the Christ is described as an eternal reign at the right hand of God the Father; which is the concept of Dextera Domini, a metaphor for the omnipotence of God. We don’t know whether or not Jabez understood this by biblical revelation of Jacob’s vow at Bethel—when the patriarch prayed a similar prayer—“if thine hand will be with me, and thou wilt deal without (Heb. away from) evil, that I suffer not… then will I serve thee” (Gen 28:22). But we have both revelations to learn from. If you would pray God’s right hand upon that situation in your life, a permanent unbelievable yet undeniable is sure to happen.

Quote for the Day: “Between the Jabez’s “he paineth,” and the Isaac’s “he laugheth” is the differentiating hand of God that saves from pain.” (Simon Olatunji)

Prayer:  Dear Lord, I know that Your hand is mighty and powerful to save from any danger and from any situation, please stretch it forth and save me. Reveal Your right hand of power to me; and cause it to prevail for me the way it prevailed for Israel as a nation, for Jacob at Bethel, for Jabez, and for the apostles — in Jesus’ mighty name. Amen.

With all my love and prayers,
