Guard Your Heart

Daily Scripture Threshing for Saturday, February 11, 2023

Today’s Text: Proverbs 4:20-27

Key Verse: Proverbs 4:23 (ESV): “Keep your heart with all vigilance, for from it flow the springs of life.”

If you read the entire text of today’s meditation, you’ll see how the author traced the course of wisdom from the beginning to its full development. While dealing with the course of wisdom, the author sees something to be taken more seriously above all other things. Indeed, I can almost be so certain that most of you hold this text dearly as a favorite Bible verse. We all love the way it talks about guarding our hearts above all other things, but most people may not have thought about what it means to guard the heart. When we visit a clinic, one vital sign of health is your heart’s condition. It gives a quick clue to your well-being.

Jesus is our Great Physician. He cares about our heart's condition. He knows that our life quality depends on the health of our heart, and therefore is reminding us of our need to guard it diligently. This is so important because everything that makes us who we are flows from the heart. And when a person’s heart stops, the person is said to have been dead. So, you see why it’s so very important we guide our heart and let the Holy Spirit fill it by faith, and flush out every unhealthiness of evil — such as sinful/faint/foolish/stony/jealous/wicked - heartedness, etc.

Guard your heart by storing up good things only in it (Luke 6:45). Guard it by living a forgiving life. Guard your heart by making enough room in it for the fruit and influence of the Holy Spirit. Don’t let it be paralyzed by fear and anxiety. Instead, let the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, rule it and rule your mind in Christ Jesus" (Phil 4:7). The remedy for these spiritual ailments is a whole heart for Jesus. Even if your heart is already broken, fainting, and weary; you can still bounce back by allowing the Holy Spirit to restore it to guided wholeness.

Quote for the Day: “A loss of heart is almost loss of life except for Christ’s Provision for Restoration (CPR). Only Jesus Christ gives the human heart its needed hope, peace, assurance, and life. Doctors try, but Jesus saves.” (Simon Olatunji)

Prayer: My Dear Lord, and Savior, I present my broken, weary, and troubled heart to You today. I ask that You give me Your heart of flesh, love, grace, forgiveness, and righteousness — in Jesus Christ's name. Amen.

With all my love and prayers,

Rev Simon Wale Olatunji, Ph.D.
