Hard to Find

Today’s Text: Proverbs 31:10–31

Key Verse: “Who can find a virtuous woman? for her price is far above rubies.” — Proverbs 31:10 (KJV)

Today, we are faced with a carefully arranged Hebrew acrostic scripture, a careful meditation through the Hebrew alphabet to portray the fullness of a virtuous woman’s character. It follows the counsel given to King Lemuel by his mother to recommend the kind of woman who may be truly praised for wisdom, strength, industry, generosity, dignity, and above all, reverence for the Lord. The passage does not merely celebrate outward beauty, material wealth, or social position; but honors a life built on godly character. At the end, it concludes that “favor is deceitful, and beauty is vain: but that woman that feareth the LORD, shall be praised.”

It tells us that this truly virtuous woman is hard to find not because godly womanhood is impossible, but because genuine virtue is cultivated in the hidden places of the heart. Rubies are precious because they are rare; likewise, a woman whose character is rooted in the fear of God carries a value that cannot be measured by appearance, fashion, education, popularity, or possessions. Her beauty is deeper than what the eye sees. It is revealed in her faithfulness when no one applauds, her integrity when compromise is easy, her wisdom when others are careless, and her kindness when others are harsh.

The woman described in this Proverbs is not idle, helpless, or careless with her calling and home. She works willingly, considers opportunities wisely, strengthens her hands, cares for her household, reaches toward the poor, speaks with wisdom, and manages her affairs responsibly. She demonstrates that godliness does not weaken a woman; it strengthens her. Her fear of the Lord does not make her passive; it makes her productive, prudent, compassionate, and prepared. She has learned that true excellence is not a performance for people but a devotion unto God.

This is not to criticize women or burden them with perfectionism. It is a divine call to honor character becoming of godly women. And it is also a challenge for every believer—male and female—to pursue true virtues that heaven values. Faithfulness is hard to find. Integrity is hard to find. Kindness governed by wisdom is hard to find. A life that serves diligently, gives generously, speaks graciously, and fears God sincerely is indeed more precious than rubies. The Lord is still raising such people in our homes, churches, workplaces, and communities.

Beloved, do not be captivated by what merely shines; seek what truly lasts. Character will outlive charm. The fear of God will outlast beauty. A godly life will leave a testimony that wealth alone cannot purchase. Whether you are seeking a life partner, raising children, leading a family, serving in ministry, or building your own character, remember this: the greatest treasure you can pursue is a heart that fears the Lord and reflects His wisdom.

Action Steps: Today, ask the Lord to build in you the virtues that are hard to find but precious to Him—integrity, diligence, wisdom, kindness, generosity, and reverence. If you are single, pray not only for someone attractive or accomplished, but for a spouse whose heart fears God and whose life bears godly fruit. If you are married, honor and encourage the godly virtues you see in your spouse. If you are raising children or mentoring others, model the character you desire them to develop. Above all, choose today to cultivate a life whose value is not based on public applause but on private devotion to God.

Let Us Pray: Heavenly Father, thank You for showing us through Your Word that true value is found in godly character. Deliver me from being impressed by outward appearance while neglecting inward virtue. Build in me a heart that fears You, hands that serve willingly, words that speak wisdom and kindness, and a life that blesses others. Help me to honor and encourage godliness in those around me, and make my life more precious to You than rubies—in Jesus’s name, Amen.
