Heart Desire for God Vs. Heart Ache for Things

Daily Scripture Threshing for Sunday, May 23, 2021

Today’s Text: Psalm 37:3-8

Key Verse: Psalm 37:4 (CEV) — “Do what the LORD wants, and he will give you your heart's desire."

Doubtless, most people’s attitude toward fame, favor, wealth and material things gives good clue to what it means to delight oneself self in a thing. For most of us making money is never an inconvenience or duty. The process may be tough, but it is still a great delight so that we pursue it with a passion. And we are neither ashamed nor afraid to express our gratitude for it. We even want everybody around us to know how much we are enjoying those financial blessings that we testify about them. Now, the question is: are we enjoying God in the same way? Are we as passionate for God and the things that please Him so that He matters more than anything else to us?

When we look around and find or have nothing but a world filled with an unimaginable amount of suffering; or when our lives seem marked by desires which are not met with accomplishment; still, our desires or delight must continue to grow in the Lord. Our eagerness for Him must never falter. Habakkuk demonstrated such delight in God in his oracle (3:17, 18): “Though the fig tree does not bud and there are no grapes on the vines, though the olive crop fails and the fields produce no food, though there are no sheep in the pen and no cattle in the stalls, yet I will rejoice in the LORD, I will be joyful in God my Savior. Folks, the way to have all the things we desire which are not there right now is not to curse God and die; but to continue to make Him our desire rather than those things.

If our hopes and desires end in fleeting materials rather than in Christ, we are of all men most miserable. And what more could be hopeless than a declining life. But God is, and remains, the healer of every human misery. He touches hearts that are wounded with any such arrow and binds up the brokenhearted. Surely, those who come to Him with bruised and bleeding souls, stricken of joy, and full of unfulfilled desires will always find solace in Him. That is what the Lord wants: our delight must be in Him, and nothing shall ever be withheld from us.

Quote for the Day: “Whether life’s beauty bloom increasingly or its meaning ebb away unimaginably, our heart desires must continue to be anchored in our love for God." (Simon Olatunji)

Prayer: O Lord, You are the desire of all ages; please continue to be my portion, and fill my soul with an ever-increasing desire for you, in Jesus' name. Amen.

With all my love and prayer,

Rev Simon Wale Olatunji, Ph.D.
