I Will Give You Rest

Daily Scripture Threshing for Today, Monday, August 10, 2026

Today’s Text: Matthew 11:25–30

Key Verse: Matthew 11:28 (KJV) — “Come unto me, all ye that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”

Matthew 11 marks a turning point in Jesus’ ministry. He has just been rejected by the religious elite in the influential cities where He did most of His mighty works - Chorazin, Bethsaida, and Capernaum - and even John the Baptist, from prison, had sent to ask if He was truly the Coming One. In response, Jesus does not adjust His message to impress the wise and powerful; He rejoices that divine truth is revealed not to the intellectual and influential - but to little children, the humble, dependent and the weary—to whom rest is offered.

The invitation is far deeper in the original language than our English conveys. It us to folks who have labored to the point of exhaustion, those who have beaten oneself out under strenuous toil and are carrying loads beyond strength. The "rest" He offers is to renew, refresh and recover from burdensome strives in exchange for a easier, kinder, more useful, better-fitting yoke, which He both gives and bears with us. Yes because He knows how life can be wearying when responsibilities multiply, expectations rise, and burdens remain unspoken.

In the midst of your present pressure, Jesus extends an invitation—not merely to work harder, worry less, or figure everything out—but to come unto Him, where true rest is found: one that strivings can never produce. To receive this rest, we must release the burdens we were never created to carry. Many are exhausted not because they have walked too far, but because they have carried too much. Worry about tomorrow, regret over yesterday, fear of the unknown, and the demand to control every outcome can make the heart heavy. But Christ says, “Come.” His call is not condemnation for the weary; it is compassion for the burdened.

Jesus does not promise that there will be no hard times, no battles, or no responsibilities. Rather, He offers us His yoke: one made easy because He carries it with us; and a burden that is made light because His grace supplies what our strength lacks. When we take His yoke, we exchange the crushing weight of self-reliance for the sustaining strength of divine dependence. Rest comes when we stop trying to be our own savior and allow Jesus to be our Shepherd.

Beloved, do not let the noise of life rob you of the nearness of the Lord. Bring your tired mind, your troubled heart, your unanswered questions, and your hidden anxieties to Him. His rest may not always change the situation immediately, but it will steady your spirit within it. The same Savior who calls you to come is faithful to keep you, strengthen you, and give peace to your soul.

Action Step: Take a quiet moment today and lay every burden before the Lord in prayer. Say, “Jesus, I come to You with all that weighs me down. I receive Your rest and take Your yoke upon me.” Refuse to carry again what you have placed in His hands.

Let us Pray: Dear Heavenly Father, my Refuge and my Rest, I come before You weary, needy, and dependent upon Your grace. Forgive me for carrying burdens You have asked me to release. Teach me to rest in Your love, trust in Your strength, and abide in Your presence. Take every anxiety, every fear, and every heavy load from my heart, and replace them with Your peace. I receive the rest that Jesus has promised today—in Jesus’s most glorious name, Amen.
