Jar Shakers

Daily Scripture Threshing for Sunday, December 3, 2023

Today’s Text: Luke 17:1-5

Key Verse: Luke 17:1 (NKJV): “Then He said to the disciples, “It is impossible that no offenses should come, but woe to him through whom they do come!”

While there is neither abatement for the guilt of anyone, great or small, who offends, nor any lessening of punishment for the offense. Jesus is clear about the curse and burden of being precursory to the stumbling of the brethren. Through this text, our Lord showed his disciples their need to give careful thought to leading others to stumble.

Let’s see what an entomologists, Kurt Vonnegut has to say to us. By his profession, he studies insects’ behavior, morphology, nutrition, and how they interact with their environment or each other. He reveals that if you put 100 black ants and 100 red ants in a jar, nothing will happen. They lived normally together. But if you start shaking the jar, the ants start suspecting, fighting and killing each other.

Until a jar shaker came into the picture, none of the red and the black ants consider the other as enemies. And no agitation or suspicion came between them. And indeed, the true enemy is the one shaking the jar. The same evil is happening within the human society. The jar shaker were in the mind of Christ when he cried woe of caution so that before we chose to shake people’s jars, we can think; or before we attack each other, we should think about who is shaking the jar!

Prayer: Dear God, help me never to be a stumbling block to any of your creature Lord. Make me a channel of blessing, a source of upliftment — in Jesus’ name. Amen.
