Keep Your Brother

Daily Scripture Threshing for Tuesday, March 3, 2020

Today’s Text: Genesis 4:1-10

Key Verses: Genesis 4:9 (ESV): ”Then the Lord said to Cain, “Where is Abel your brother?” He said, “I do not know; am I my brother’s keeper?”

Questions like where is Abel your brother? and Adam, Adam, where are you? are often asked by God not because God was ignorant of who, where and what; but he always asks to give us opportunity to come to an end of ourselves, and bring us to submission and confession. For how shall a man be ever justified before God, except he realizes his faults and humbles himself. But like many of us, in our self justification and righteousness, Cain said, I know not; thus adding a lying tongue to a murderous spirit.

Our conscience serves as the voice of God. By it, we are given opportunities to quiet our noisy spirit and let remorse track our footsteps; but that being said, the core message of this text is our obligations of (or to) brotherhood, which this murderer, Cain, renounced. Whenever we renounce obligation to our brethren (male or female), we commit sin of rejection of the family bond, negation of love; and manifest the spirit of Cain, a murderer. If we allow malice in our heart, we are as guilty as one with murder by his hands. There’s no single moment in which we’re not accountable for our brothers.

Quote for the Day: "When we think our acts are hidden, we strive to put it out of mind, or hide it under the earth; forgetting that all things are made open before the Lord with whom we have to deal.” (Simon Olatunji)

Prayer: Dear Lord, please help me not to be ruled by hate toward those around me, but let my heart be filled with love, joy, peace and happiness for others, in Jesus Christ name. Amen.

With all my love and prayer,

Rev Simon Wale Olatunji, PhD
