Today’s Text: 1 John 2:1-6
Key Verse: 1 John 2:5 (ESV): “But whoever keeps his word, in him truly the love of God is perfected. By this we may know that we are in him.”
Not many statements begin with a conjunction. The English construct does not usually support that. In the instance of today’s text, the “but” is used as a logical contrastive conjunction between the previous assertion and the next. The beloved apostle already asserted what it takes for him to personally knows the Lord. In verse 3 of previous chapter, he assured his reader that his confession of Jesus Christ as Lord is not a result of head or mere biological knowledge. Remember he happens to be an earthly sibling of Christ. But to him, it is a result of that which he has personally seen in the spirit and heard and experienced. He knows Jesus Christ personally; but He goes deeper by also experiencing Him as personal Lord, and by obeying His words.
Therefore to know God in his (John)’s theology is born out of fellowship with Him. This knowledge is not intellectual. It is moral and spiritual connection with Him. Therefore, anyone who knows God in this way, keeps His words. They are true worshippers, not just religious people. They are related to God by the reality of the blood of Jesus Christ. According to John, that is how we know that we are in God. Every man needs that experiential knowledge that comes from an inward and spiritual acquaintance with God, which is not possible by religion. Only genuine faith in Jesus Christ, and our love for Him gives such knowledge. To have life eternal is to know the only true God. And the only evidence of knowing God is simply declared, which is keeping His words. Do you know God enough to keep His words?
Quote for the Day: “Keeping God’s word is experiential and habitual. It does not make a sinlessness saint; what is does is help us walk in God’s light and keep His Word.” (Simon Olatunji)
Prayer: Dear Lord, deepen my love for You O Lord and help me in daily walk with You and in faithful obedience to Your word, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
With all my love and prayers,
Rev Simon Wale Olatunji, Ph.D
