Led by Still Waters: Introducing the Year to Overflow (Part 4)

Daily Scripture Threshing for Tuesday, January 3, 2023

Today’s Text: Psalms 23:1-6

Key Verse: Psalm 23:2 (ESV): “He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters.

ree

The fullest image of Christ’s saving grace is demonstrated in the second part of our key verse today. As our shepherd—the great shepherd of the sheep—Christ leads His sheep out of an eternal thirst which nothing else could satisfy. Revelation 7:17 tells us how, as the Lamb in the center of the throne, He is also our shepherd, who “will lead them to springs of living water, and God will wipe away every tear from their eyes." That’s the forward looking hope of every believer in Christ. “They will not hunger or thirst, nor will scorching heat or sun beat down on them. For He who has compassion on them will guide them and lead them beside springs of water.” (Isaiah 49:10).

The world systems always give us noisome watershed which leaves us all drained in a common outlet of misery and thirst; but Jesus leads us to a quiet flow that freely bestows abundant repose to us. When we have the Lord as a shepherd, the joy, quiescence and the restored soul we get are incomparable with the boisterous and destructive streams that the world gives. What better promise of a great journey into a new year could anyone find?! Why not, therefore, seek to belong and be led by this Shepherd who alone restores, revive and quicken the soul. He alone makes us feast on the abundance of His house, and gives us drink from His river of delights. (Psalm 36:8). Indeed, He Himself, is the river whose streams delight the city of God, the holy place where the Most High dwells. (Psalm 46:4)

Quote for the Day: “In the economy of heaven. Struggle is not an asset; rest is. And, finding God’s pasture is the basic premium to lasting dividends.” (Simon Olatunji)

Prayer:  Dear Lord, I look up to You; feed me in good pasture, cause that Your lofty mountains will be my grazing land all years long. Cause that I am able to lay down in a good grazing land; and feed in Your rich pasture — in Jesus Christ's name. Amen.
