Let Your Light Shine

Daily Scripture Threshing for Sunday, June 7, 2020

Today’s Text: Matthew 5:13-16

Key Verse: Matthew 5:16 (ESV): “In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.

Sequel to our two earlier devotional meditation on becoming exemplary Christians is the challenge to be light of our world. Our Lord commands it. “Let your light so shine!” He said. This means that our light must shine (not should shine). A preacher once visited a church which has an oil lamp set in front of the lectern. Its cotton wick gives light from the shallow dish of oil. Suddenly, the oil ran out, the wick burned dry, and instead of giving light, the lamp began to give smoke and made people cough. That’s what happens when a believer tries to shine God’s light while he depends on himself as the fuel of the witness.

It is the Spirit that gives life; yes, of course it is He that gives light. We stink, smoke and choke people except we let the Holy Spirit be our fuel. There is enough smoke of sin and confusion in the world already. Men and women live and grope in thick darkness without the Lord. The motive of this command is in contrast to the self projecting lifestyle of the Pharisees who love to project self. But you have been called to be light to the darkened world. You’re not trying to be seen of men to win their praise, but you’re giving out light to win men: to the praise and glory of God, the Giver of the light.

Quote for the Day: "Necessary and essential to the Great Commission, is the Commissioner’s command to let your light—of new life, of the character and conduct of Christ, of His doctrines, and of His easy yoke —shine!” (Simon Olatunji)

Prayer: Dear Father in Heaven, help me to live my life each day in a manner that my light shines so bright so much that all can see and give glory to You, in Jesus Christ’s name. Amen.

With all my love and prayer,

Rev Simon Wale Olatunji, PhD
