Today’s Text: Luke 10:25-37
Key Verses: Luke 10:37 (NIV) — “The expert in the law replied, "The one who had mercy on him." Jesus told him, "Go and do likewise.”
In 1992, Seattle, Washington, a 5th grade Christian boy had cancer and needed a bone marrow transplant. He needed $200,000 for the transplant to be done within 90 days to live; but his father's insurance could not cover the procedure. His 7th grade neighbor who walked with a limp and struggled in special education classes, heard about his neighbo's ordeal, and visited his home. "I'm here to help out." He said; but what can he do? He reached out his hand and stuffed 12 five-dollar bills (from his life savings) into his neighbor’s hand. Words got out about the boy's gift, and some kids too organized a walk-a-thon, others contacted a local newspaper, and others held a car wash. Soon, the kids' wave of compassion poured out across Seattle till an area TV stations picked up the story. The response from the news stories was overwhelming. Only four weeks after, the boy's gift of $60 grew over $220,000, and the marrow transplant was successfully done. This occurrence led to the generous boy accepting Jesus Christ as his Savior after becoming close with his beneficiary Christian boy. This story sparks a new light across Seatle on that young unlikely hero, who gave his all to save the life of another and in the process, he received eternal life. The boy surely loved his life savings; but he did not fail to show unalloyed love to his neighbor as well. What about you? If your neighbors, coworkers, church members or acquaintances pattern their love for others after yours, how would our community story turn out? Would there be a new spark of light of great neighborliness, or would selfishness skyrocket to its most incredible height?! We are all familiar with the term Good Samaritan which though has become renowned in both religious and secular circles, originated from today's text. As Jesus turned the question of “who is my neighbor?”back to the lawyer seeking the way to inherit eternal life; he is turning the same to us today. Are you sincere in your thirst after God? Are you genuine in your love for people? Our Lord Jesus Christ wants us to follow the example of the Samaritan man in this text: so He commands us to “go and do likewise.” Is there a sin of rejection lurking in a secret corner of your heart against a neighbor? Why not confess it and seek a better way to love your neighbors as the Lord would have you love them?!
Quote for the Day: ”No person robbed of the true fellowship with God may truly experience fellowship with others or his neighbors. We need the love of Christ to both sudue and transform our human nature before we can love genuinely.” (Simon Olatunji)
Prayer: Lord, give me the spirit of kind neighborliness which uphold and tend others in suffering, homelessness, loneliness, adversity and prosperity, in Jesus name. Amen.
With all my love and prayers, I wish you a refreshing time in the presence of the Lord,
Rev Simon Wale Olatunji, PhD
