Today’s Text: Matthew 22:36-40
Key Verses: Matthew 22:39 (KJV) — “And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.”
The word of the Lord is an ever-increasing yet never changing word of power. We were on Luke's parallel to this scripture yesterday when the Lord admonished us to be a source of His love to anyone positioned in our way, world and experience. Today is a leap into a yet deeper dimension of the revelation. Whereas it is so easy for our generation to slip into in the danger of missing the essential truths of faith while going through motions of religion. We often major on distracting and minor details. However, our Lord always seeks every opportunity to call us back to the principles of our faith. This is most characteristic of Christ's teachings in the New Testament. One of those fundamental principles is loving our neighbors as ourselves. It is a law and must be obeyed internally (in heart) and externally (in action).
As Christians, God is our first object of love. He deserves our deepest love for many reasons, among which include: 1.) He created us: so that our love to Him must be born out of gratitude to Him. 2.) He first loved us: so that our love to Him and others must be a reflection of His love to us. 3.) He is good and glorious in His dealings with us: so that we must extend His goodness and kindness to others. And, 4.) While there is no other object of affection so supremely worthy of our heart's devotion like God, He Himself commands us to extend an expression of our love for Him unto others. We must do this both as a constant response to, and continued reflection of, the goodness and kindness which we ourselves have received of/from God. Unfortunately, we are indifferent in our attitude towards Him (God) and others. But rather than condemn us, He is seeking a way for us to come to repentance and do the right things. Today, as we have received another opportunity to live for Him, let us love Him with all our hearts and remember the second dimension of it also. Let us love our neighbors as ourselves. Indeed, we cannot separate the second command from the first: if we love God, we shall also love all His created people.
Quote for the Day: ”Christian calling and love is a double edged sword: it absorbs us in affectionate heavenly contemplation and involves us in passionate earthly transformation.” (Simon Olatunji)
Prayer: Dear Lord, please fill my heart with the love that you freely give. Help me to love others and be a free expression of Your life, joy, and love for them, in Jesus name. Amen.
With all my love and prayers,
Rev Simon Wale Olatunji, PhD
