Mid Year Revival Cry (Part 14): A Passion for Prayer and Spiritual Discipline

Daily Scripture Threshing for Saturday, June 24, 2023

Today’s Text: Acts 2:36-47

Key Verses: Acts 2:42 (NLT): “All the believers devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching, and to fellowship, and to sharing in meals (including the Lord’s Supper), and to prayer.”

Revival and prayer are inseparable twin. You cannot have one without the other. Besides, prayer always precedes revival, and revival always creates fresh and deeper desire to pray, worship, and meditate on God. The apostles of our Lord built an unparalleled foundation of prayer. They leaned upon the everlasting arms of the Lord and trusted God for all they did.

They leaned the art and act of praying in season and out of season from our Lord so that, sometimes, even in sleep, prayers continue as God clears away distractions and speaks to our subconscious mind in dreams. Also, when Elijah sets us powerful example of how to call on the name of the Lord for fire and abundance of rain. The first time he prayed on Mount Carmel, God sent fire from heaven (1 Kings 18:38), and the second time, on the same mountain, he prayed, and God sent rain (1 Kings 18:44-45).A church that desires God’s fire and rain cannot and must not joke with the ministry of prayer. We must pray if we too would experience any form of outpouring from the Lord.

From today’s text, the Early Church presents a very helpful hint into what a Christian society and individuals should be. We need a return of/to such earnest thirst after God, and a desire for fuller knowledge of God and continuance in the apostles’ doctrines, which are the basis for healthy Christian life. We must return to their habitual devotion to decency, decorum, devotion, and discipline that helped them to live in the most endearing communion and intimate friendship with one another, which was especially expressed in mutual affection and in their breaking of bread.

Quote for the Day: “Don’t seek revival if your heart is hardened again united praying and loyalty to corporate praying and devotion.” (Simon Olatunji)

Prayer: Lord Jesus, draw us, beckon on us and speak to us again. Call us by name and convince us of our first love. Send on us again the fire and rain of Your love. Tear down every spiritual power that distract, tempt, numb, confuse and deceive us, and fill us anew with Your Holy Spirit—in the mighty name of Jesus Christ. Amen.

With all my love and prayers,

Rev Simon Wale Olatunji, Ph.D.
