Mixed Multitude

Daily Scripture Threshing for Wednesday, July 12, 2023

Today’s Text: Exodus 12:33-39

Key Verses: Exodus 12:38 (ESV): “A mixed multitude also went up with them, and very much livestock, both flocks and herds.”

You must have heard the words “mixed multitude.” Perhaps, you have used it a couple of times. But just what does it mean in biblical context? The Hebrew word, "erev rav” is the word translated “mixed multitude” in the Hebrew Bible. The Jews use it to describe numerous mixture of foreign breeds who are non-Jews that mingle with them when they departed Egypt, and/or along their journey.

Mixed multitude needs close attention because they can hold a key place in the destiny of God’s people. Yes, it was the erev rav that influenced most murmuring against God and His prophets. They lured God’s people to idolatrous things and acts; promote bitterness and strife; and cause division and resentment among God’s people. Today’s church is also constituted of both the “spiritual sons of Israel” and the “mixed multitude.” And this indeed sounds a warning to us.

Anyone among us who hears the gospel but the words which s/he hears do not profit them, not being mixed with faith is an erev rav. They want the blessings, not the blesser. They want to belong in the church and to the world. They promote sensuality, support homosexuality and permit libertinism. Beware and be warned because the Lord is only allowing both the wheat and the chaffs — His "kingdom people" and those destined for His wrath — to remain together until the day when He shall separate them with fire.

Quote for the Day: “The church needs more carefulness these days when we seem to have more weeds than seeds; more tares than wheats — m more children of the Devil who planted themselves or are planted by the devil in the church.” (Simon Olatunji)

Prayer: Dear Lord, please purge out your church in your most merciful ways. Fish out the Ananias and Sapphiras from within us; separate the Achans and all the accursed things from us—in the mighty name of Jesus Christ. Amen.

With all my love and prayers,
