Quest for “Better” and “More”

Daily Scripture Threshing for Friday , January 14, 2022

Today’s Text: Psalm 119:97-104

Key Verse: Psalm 119:99 (ESV): “I have more understanding than all my teachers,

for your testimonies are my meditation.”

We are daily bombarded with mundane things that take a toll on us. Tragedies, losses, pain, pandemic, and violence are our common woes. In his days, David did not have it different in this regard—he may actually have had it worse—being surrounded by battles at all sides. However, he was different and better than most of his contemporaries and mentors. He distinguished himself in the ways he cultivated a heart for God, and love for his word.

We too must cultivate a great heart for God in all we do. Like him, we must always turn our thoughts to the things of God. There is no gainsaying the fact that God’s ways and words are not natural to us. But with the aid of the Holy Spirit, our ever-present help in every infirmity, we can cultivate a love for God and His ways.

The psalmist already highlighted some glorious blessings of loving God and his ways: we are blessed with wisdom and understanding to outwit our enemies no matter how shrewd and crafty they are. We are made wiser than men who mentor us not just in the understanding of doctrines, but in the very grace of partaking in the grace and nature of God than they. We may be babes and ducklings but loving the ways of God blesses us with a deeper understanding of holy things of God even better than older and more experienced people. To be better of, become more, and have more, this is the way!
