Today’s Text: Romans 15:1-11
Key Verses: Romans 15:13 (NIV) “May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.”
Joy is both essential to and exceptional in any life — but it is even more true for the Christians. Sin imposes a life of sobriety and severity upon mankind; but Jesus, by His death on the cross, redeemed us from all the depressive issues of the Fall. From Adam, humanity has pursued joy in every avenue imaginable. We have gone everywhere, yet there is no finding it. No, not outside of Christ. We have sent astronauts to the space. We have drilled the earth. But none of these has guaranteed us the needed joy and peace. We have invented all forms of tools for our convenience, yet each day, our records of suicide and depression prove that peace and joy are not from things.
Realizing the forgoing sobering realities, Apostle Paul could not but resort to the One and Only, who alone is the giver of all we may ever wanted or needed. The Apostle prayed for the hope that covers all, from this present moment of darkness, to the dimmest distance when time shall cease to be, and even throughout all eternity. Piece and joy are twin attitude of the Christians. By the reason of our life in union with Christ, we have an unconquerable hope each passing day, and in contemplating the future. This gives joy and peace which the world neither knows nor can give.
Let us always bear it in mind that it is only what God does for us that keep us unmoved in our day-to-day struggle for survival. This text asserts that joy may not be found in anything; not in pleasure; not in money; not in position or fame; and of course, not in religion. It is found in relationship with Jesus. Great men have lived lives of pleasure. Many wealthy men have accounted themselves as most miserable men in spite of comfort, travels, expensive living, and leisurely lifestyle; yet, are totally empty and sad. Today marks another Independence Celebration for Anerica — a country that has done so well for its people and world; but yet has neither peace nor joy. Real joy is not from without. It is found in Jesus Christ alone.
Quote for the Day: “Jesus is man’s true peace. Knowing Him brings us first into reconciliation with God, then into concord with our own souls — which brings us true joy." (Simon Olatunji)
Prayer: O Lord, give us the joy only You can grant, and give us a willing spirit to pursue truth and seek You in our lives, in the name of Jesus. Amen.
With all my love and prayers, I wish all Americans happy July 4:
