Refrain Your Eyes from Tears

Daily Scripture Threshing for Today, Monday, May 4, 2026

Today’s Text: Jeremiah 31:15–17

Key Verse: Jeremiah 31:16 (ESV) — “Thus says the Lord: ‘Keep your voice from weeping, and your eyes from tears, for there is a reward for your work, declares the Lord, and they shall come back from the land of the enemy.’”

There are seasons when sorrow feels overwhelming, when loss, delay, or disappointment presses heavily upon the soul. Yet in the midst of grief, God speaks a tender but powerful command: “Refrain your eyes from tears.” This is not a denial of pain, but a divine assurance that sorrow will not have the final word. God sees every tear, and none are wasted in His sight.

In today’s text, the Lord addresses deep anguish, yet anchors His people in hope. He calls them to lift their eyes beyond present pain to the promise of restoration. The instruction to refrain from tears is rooted in His covenant faithfulness—“there is a reward for your work.” What you have sown in faith, obedience, and endurance is not in vain. Even when results are delayed, heaven is actively working on your behalf.

God’s restoration often unfolds in ways we cannot immediately perceive. What appears lost is not beyond His reach. He is able to bring back what was taken, redeem what seemed wasted, and restore what felt irretrievable. The “land of the enemy” is not a permanent holding place when God has declared recovery. His power transcends every setback, and His purpose overrides every opposition.

Refraining from tears also speaks of a posture of trust. It is choosing faith over despair, hope over hopelessness. While tears may come, they are not meant to define your future. God invites you into a place where confidence in His promise steadies your heart. In Him, mourning gives way to joy, and sorrow is transformed into testimony.

Child of God, your weeping has an expiration date. The God who sees you is also the God who restores you. Hold on to His word, even in the night season. What He has promised, He is faithful to perform. Lift your eyes, steady your heart, and trust that your season of restoration is nearer than you think.

Action Steps: Bring your burdens honestly before the Lord and surrender every source of grief or anxiety to Him. Identify one promise of God that speaks directly to your situation and meditate on it today. Take a step of faith by expressing gratitude in advance for the restoration God is bringing.

Let Us Pray: Lord, You see every tear I have shed, and I thank You that none of them are in vain. Help me to trust in Your promise of restoration and to lift my eyes above my present circumstances. Strengthen my heart, renew my hope, and remind me that You are working all things for my good. I receive Your peace and choose faith over fear. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
