Today’s Text: Psalm 62:1–12
Key Verses: Psalm 62:1–2 (ESV): “For God alone my soul waits in silence; from him comes my salvation. He alone is my rock and my salvation, my fortress; I shall not be greatly shaken.”
Today is the 7th day of the 7th month of the 3rd 7th year after 2000 AD. It is a most perfect day to meditate on perfect peace and security. We do not need to look around, or look too far to see that our world’s sense of security is clearly under attack. Everything that symbolizes a covering for our age is being besieged. Job loss is on a dismal rise; children are either abused, abducted or killed; our young men are either roaming the streets or in jail; policing has almost become radicalized against the harmless; democracy is more and more becoming a tool of demonization and oppression; and religious institutions can no longer speak truth. Obviously, the enemy does not want us to enjoy a safe and secure world. He wants to completely topple our peace. And he works hard to keep up his games endlessly.
A Dutch professor took time to study and evaluate the cost of defense or offense by a soldier at different epochs in history. He estimated the cost to be less than one dollar during the reign of Julius Caesar. He opined that it had considerably inflated to more than $2,000 during the time of Napoleon. And at the end of the First World War, it had multiplied several times to $17,000. By the Second World War, he thought it was about $40,000. And in Vietnam, in 1970, he suggested that it cost the United States $200,000. And of course, recently, the news was out about a Nigerian political appointee that purchased 2 bullet-proof BMWs for $1.4 million. We do all these, raise our fences almost stronger and taller than prison’s; yet our lives, homes, schools, businesses and other places of humanity are not safe.
The Psalmist confession in today's text points us to our one and only source of security. It is clear that it is only in God and God alone that we are (and can be) secure. The text gives us three pictures of security in God. It pictures to us that God is our sure rock. This assures us of steadfastness, stability, and the unmovable and yet all-moving power of God. He (God) is our salvation: He gives us security in this present world, and in the world to come. The Psalmisist pictures Him as our fortress because God alone is our sure protection. Solid, unbroken divine protection is your heritage if only you too can speak to your own soul (like David) to “Find rest, O my soul, in God alone; my hope comes from him.”
Quote for the Day: “Our world has witnessed a dramatic increase in conferencing and conversation on saving our planet, alleviating poverty, and boosting economc; yet, the more we tried, the worse we get because the solution is not in ourselves. It is in God.” (Simon Olatunji)
Prayer: Dear Lord, I look up to you for safety. Free me from harm and danger. Secure me from measures and powers of the enemy set loose to destroy me, in Jesus' name. Amen.
With all my love and prayers,
Rev Simon Wale Olatunji, Ph.D.
