Today’s Text: Ephesians 6:10-18
Key Verse: Ephesians 6:10 (ESV): “Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might”

Acts 18 and 19 provides us full background explanation of Paul’s ministry and experience at Ephesus: How he had to stay back at the city for months to strengthen Ephesian believers against the spiritual climate of the city. Thus, having spent a significant time addressing doctrinal issues and the need for unity among believers, Paul opens this session with “finally.” This word did not just occur, it did to indicate that this final section builds upon all the preceding outline for doctrine and unity within the church. The body of Christ must be united and built up so as to be ready for the inevitable spiritual engagement against evil. The apostle is therefore clear that we cannot do this except we are strong in the Lord. And we cannot be strong in the Lord, except we are first in the Lord, saved through faith in Christ alone. That’s why Paul frequently used the phrase “in Christ,” or “in Him.” No one can understand or experience strength in the Lord unless s/he is truly in the Lord.
Being in the Lord reveals the weakness and futility of the human strength. No one can be in the Lord, and be strong in him and not realize his personal weakness. The closer to God we get, the clearer our dependence on Him becomes. No believer can completely trust Christ for strength until s/he comes to the realization that they are unable to help themselves. It is this sense of personal weakness that moves us to take refuge in the Lord’s strength. Brethren, our strength is in the Lord, not in our erudity or credibility. It is not in the size of our assembly, or the expanse of our travels. Great men have had to learn this lesson in hard ways: Peter learnt it through his incredible denials of Christ. Paul learnt it through the torment of a messenger of Satan to keep him from exalting himself. No arrogant Christian is ready to take on the battle against the forces of evil because pride itself is a weapon of the enemy against him, and a sure source of falling.
Quote for the Day: “We cannot take refuge in the Lord’s strength except we realize and refuse our own weakness.” (Simon Olatunji)
Prayer: Dear Lord, please strengthen me when I’m sagging and my motivation is lagging. I need your strength and your fresh touch to stand against all satanic oppositions — in Jesus’ name. Amen.
