Strife Grows with Every Strike

Daily Scripture Threshing for Monday, February 17, 2020

Our Text: Proverbs 20:1-5

Key Verses: Proverbs 20:3 (NASB): “Keeping away from strife is an honor for a man, But any fool will quarrel.”

A Greek legend has it that Hercules was once threatened by a strange-looking creature, which he struck with his club and moved on, but soon afterwards was surprised to be confronted by this same creature, only now three times as large.

Hercules struck it again and again and each time it grew in size until finally it completely blocked the road. Then, Athena advised Hercules to stop. "The monster is called Strife," she said. "Let it alone, and it will soon become as small as it was at first."

Idleness, wrath, strife and drunkenness are relative spirits, sponsored by satanic control, and needs strong spiritual attention. The writer of this proverbs warns that a quick-flaming anger is a mark of shallow and foolish living. But God gives great grace for his children to conquer anger through meekness. Worldly minds may call this sheepishness; but probably makes you more like your blessed savior who was like sheep before his shearers. Only if we learn to be the sheep would we be able to force our strives to shrink.
