Take Me to Bethel (Part 5)

Daily Scripture Threshing for Thursday, September 1, 2022

Today’s Text: Genesis 28:10-22

Key Verse: Genesis 28:13 (NLT): “At the top of the stairway stood the Lord, and he said, “I am the Lord, the God of your grandfather Abraham, and the God of your father, Isaac. The ground you are lying on belongs to you. I am giving it to you and your descendants.

Every life experience offers us unique opportunities to experience God. When the people of Israel cowered under the yoke of Pharaoh’s slavery, He attracted Moses to Himself through fire and came mightily for the deliverance of the Jews. Ahab had slid into apostasy and the whole nation of Israel was dragged along in the mire. But God rose up through Elijah and showed up for His people. When Isaiah was ravaged by grief for the loss of godly king Uzziah, whom he had thought would be a type of Jehu for the deliverance of Israel from Baal worship. He was busy mourning in the temple, but God rode upon the occasion to reveal His glory and issued his next level call.

Jacob’s encounter at Bethel reveals that while we are on the run; pursuing our sensual matters and driven by our own devices, God always reaches out for us. Most times, when we are most destitute of help, peace, comfort, and/or comforter, God reaches out and sets up His ladder of grace. Jacob’s encounter stands out to teach us how God is always at the other end whether we find a ladder or a tunnel. God was at the head of Jacob’s vision-ladder. Throughout human history, He always has a way of initiating a journey that will lead us to finding Him. The only question is: would you allow Him when He shows up at the edge of your ladder? Sometimes, the experience presents itself as if God is ruthless with us. You may find nothing different from a rock under your head right now; but God has a purpose that is beyond your understanding. He is surely looking out to take you to Bethel—at every opportunity—to show up for you, and comfort you in your pain.

Quote for the Day: “Jacob’s dream has become a type of Jesus’s revelation: God shows up at the head of his dream’s ladder., Jesus showed up at the head of the cross in reality.” (Simon Olatunji)

Prayer: Dear Lord, I pray today that You will reveal yourself anew, and show up for your people. In this new month, show Your powerful provision, protection, and direction for your people throughout the month and onward. Let each day usher in good things, and each journey a manifestation of help. Open Your doors of blessings and favor for us, and watch Your word in our lives and family — in Jesus’ name. Amen.

I wish you a happy new month with all my Love and Prayers,

Rev Simon Wale Olatunji, Ph.D.
